Philippe Buys Piano Music! Monday, December 15, 2003 • read strip Viewing 50 comments:

Man beef is so crestfallen. Also the fact that Beef hears exactly what Philippe says is a stroke of genius.

Did Philipe ever actually get that piano music?

Did he get taken off the Capital One mailing list?

there is no capital one mailing list.

there is only your dead friends in hell.

I wish dead friends in hell would stop trying to sell me credit protection plans.

You know, now that I think about it, everytime a friend dies I seem to get a lot of telemarketer calls...

This idea goes deeper than we know...

That's sad though.

All your dead friends went to hell.

Anyone who isn't hellbound isn't worth hanging out with.

Sadly most of my friends would just call me even more after realizing this.

Avatar-comment Synergy!

I hear Satan throws a wicked rave.

This is one of my top 5 all-time assetbar comments.

Capital One sent my dead grandfather a credit card application. He'd been dead EIGHTEEN FUCKING YEARS.

It all makes sense now.

What's in your wallet?

Hm. Portable doorway to hell, evidently.

(Hint: portable doorway to hell = portable doorway to immense credit card debt = exact same thing!)

There is no Dana only Capital One.

At first I didn't get this one. About a week later I started laughing hysterically for 5 minutes in the shower. My family was concerned.

Your family watch you shower?

That ranks up in the top five most awesome counter-comments ever.

Who are you, Letterman?

I'm Spartacus.

Oh shit... lucky I'm not near a well.

I know you probably didn't put that much thought into this comment, and I'm honestly not trying to be a dick about it, but really picture someone laughing hysterically for five minutes. Nothing is that funny.

Especially when the thing they're laughing about is not actually present.

A comment left by nutmeg was marked lame too many times and excluded. (marked lame by rolotonybrowntown, _cheesekayke, footslogga)

Deep down, we all feel pretty bad that we don't know very much about piano music.

i know a lot about piano music, but i feel bad not knowing more. and i agree, it IS important to understand piano music. 1, alt text.

Note that the telesales says the CDs are 19.99 each for 5, which probably means the total price is $100. The cold callers of hell are merciless.

Unless its $19.99 per masterpeice.

Phillipe, you knew you were gonna have to pay for these masterpeices eventually.

No, he didn't!

Chubby for the early reference

Philippe has no way of getting any money, ever.

Maybe he should commit SUICIDE

oh my gosh, a stranger!

Roast Beef's paw on the glass of the telephone booth makes it.

Agreed, its like he's reaching out to Phillipe and only getting cold glass. The expression on his face is also fantastic. One of the comics that is funny yet touching in the same panel.

Yeah, it's like he's in a glass box of emotion.

It's always the final panel that makes it.

Yes. Also with the slight stuttering, 'O-okay' all hesitating with a lump rising up in his throat. It makes me want to actually cry.

You can cry if you want, Aliiis. You are among friends here.

Nah. Honestly I just think he's a little weirded out that Phillipe is acting all weird to him.

I think maybe this is my favorite Achewood.

Beef's non-standard punctuation suits him so well. Those dangling exclamation marks look so fragile. There are plenty of comics characters (e.g. Sandman) with distinctive typefaces and/or speech bubble designs, but few whose (mis)use of punctuation helps define their personality. This is one of the things which raises Achewood into the upper echelons of the medium.

Sorry, that nearly turned into an essay. "Discuss, with appropriate examples, the use of non-standard punctuation and typographical devices as a means toward character development in sequential art, with particular emphasis on online media (8,500 - 10,000 words, plus appendices)."

This is a lot like talking to someone who's trippin' balls, and everything you tell them takes on a real subjective and distorted meaning, followed by an answer based on that delusion. Except in this case, Philippe is in fact talking to someone from hell (where the devil lives).

The telephones in hell trick you into believing your friends are selfish and anti-social...

This makes me laugh out loud every single time I read it.

i'm also one of the many who laughed out loud to the last panel...beef is so confused!

Am I the only one who noticed that Philippe never told telemarketer-Beef his address? Granted, Beef probably actually knows that information, but still. I would be freaked out.

These last couple of strips are complete genius.
