Frankly, I don't see that there are any other viable options.

I think maybe Ultra Peanut has been a bad influence on him.

Chubbied for the subtle xenophobia implicit in that statement.

...Philippe's eyes in panel 3...

Jesus, you're right! GOD there is so much going on there.

I think that's the only time any Achewood character has had such eyes.

Except Robert Johnson, Ray with Robert Johnson and that creepy guy -- mad scientist -- who did the mindwipe on Bensington Butters III

Can't you
SEE?

Add John and Deanster as well.

Roast Beef drew some on while in the 1978 Volvo 244GLE Of Despair.

Oh, hee hee hee! Hee hee! Oh, hee hee hee!

...Philippe's eyes and the flipper flab in panel 3...

It reminds me of what a startled baby looks like. All wide-eyed and trembling a little, with no idea what to do.

I cannot stop laughing.

Phillipe could open a lemonade stand to earn some money. Yet he's so eager to commit suicide.

He tried that, once. Pat had him shut down for not obtaining a business license.

The first time I read this, I thought, "why would you need a business license to commit suicide?"

I mean, Pat's a dick, but...

Phillipe thinks about suicide a lot. Maybe Roast Beef is rubbing off on him.

They do work on the same newspaper

he is five!

This happens. Japan leads the pack for five-year-old suicides.

A fine solution to an otherwise impassable obstacle.

Ray is a stern businessman, cold asking for 3 half-Gs from a boy who is five.

a six...teen-hundo, if you will.

woah, this stip is kinda messed up. phillipe's eyes really threw me off

It's not like Ray needs the money. He just enjoys the power.

At this point, he hasn't made his money. He gets his cash from his demonic piano skills and an old porno daguerrotype that he sells on eBay.

He didn't sell the porn on ebay. He bought it on ebay.

And really, it was never explicitly mentioned that he actually sold it, just how much it would fetch at auction.
Considering the amount of impulse buying Ray does on eBay and the fact there's never been any sign that he's ever even needed any more money since Ass In Your Pants, I never made the assumption that he actually sold the daguerrotype.

Was he a breast man before or after that, anyway? He did mention that the lady was about to be spanked and so it may be worth more to certain...

Alt text: "collection agencies on the mind"

"Wait a minute, I have no way of every getting any money." The thoughts of a liberal arts major recently graduated from college.

And of course the inevitable, but perfectly logical, thoughts that follow.

:(

It is both the funniest and saddest thing that the fantastic life lessons and learning from literature and history have no impact whatsoever on your ability to make money and provide for a family.

Phillipe doesn't have a lot of options

This also happens when you have no health insurance.
Who understands Philippe?
Me.
(I do)

Ray symbolizes the gas company in my life right now. Philippe is the little voice that I can wash away with booze.
Me.
(I do)

No one's noticed that Ray asks him for the MINIMUM he can pay?

THESE EYES!

I like like that Philippe specifically considers committing suicide . There are so few things in this world to commit. Adultery is one. To the Lord Buddha is probably the only other one that I can think of right now.

So you think he should have just thought "I should commit"? Maybe I don't understand, but that's what I'm hearing.

Maybe he meant to italicize "commit"?

Suicide is a viable option

Suicide: it just makes sense.

...it's painless, it brings on many changes; and I can take or leave it as I please.

But "Suicide: Don't Do It" by Big Fun is one of the most popular songs among teenagers in America today.

Something in his head-voice tells me Phillipe thinks that "to commit suicide" is akin to "to take a long trip far away" or "a peaceful nap." (lies my mother told me.)

Those are some pretty contrived maternal lies.

Props to your mom!

Talk to your provider for options on possible suicide. Please Hold.

The last four panels basically sum up my credit history except it takes place in a gym not Ray's house.

my heart lurched in the last panel

A 5 from me JUST for Philippe's spong in panel 3.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! We love you Philipe!

This is perhaps the best strip.

the only time philippe's eyes are not lines ^__^

I love strips where the punchline is a decision or expressed desire to commit suicide.
This is the other one:

Is it wrong that it makes me happy to imagine a five year old contemplating suicide for financial reasons?
