french fry - more dreams Wednesday, February 6, 2002 • read strip Viewing 51 comments:

That is one brave potato sliver.

I appreciate the simplicity of an otter and his fry.

I never noticed before but Philippe looks pretty weird rolled on his side.

He's basically just a popsicle.

otterpop

A, dare I say, freezepop.

Attercop!

Tomnoddy

Lontra canadensis.

haha! you are british!

such innocence such beauty that is, phillipe and the french fry

The happiest Achewood moment.

oh my god i accidentally lamed you for your wonderful comment i am so sorry.

that french fry can do ANYTHING.

The last frame is a t-shirt that needs to be made.

I'd buy it before the fry hit the ground.

Maybe on the back it could have Philippe pushing the French Fry in the roller skate.

like, down in the corner of the back? the shirts with designs on the rear of the neck are ridiculously lame.

This is my favorite Philippe strip.

Phillippe looks weird anyhow. What's weirder though, surely, is that a potato sliver can talk in the first place (unless this is in Phillipes imagination, kids do this sort of thing)

Schulz would be proud.

you see Schulz, I see Watterson

Really? Phillipe seems like the antithesis of Calvin to me. The way the french fry speaks is just like Woodstock!

Having said that I think Bill would be mighty proud of Achewood too. I wonder if Onstad is a C&H fan?

Very different children yes, and the fry does speak in those little shrieklines, but the arc seems to me to be about philippe's imagination rather than a talking french fry. Calvin's a clever, crafty sometimes vicious boy who as such relates to a stuffed tiger. Philippe on the other hand has a blast conversing with a stick of fried starch.

Fair enough, there are resemblances to Calvin in terms of a little boy with imagination. But in terms of style I think this strip is directly referencing those strips with Snoopy and Woodstock. I may be wrong though, it's been a while since I read Peanuts.

I'd vote Watterson, just for the whimsy/cuteness, and for the times he would have an elaborate setting with just a simple joy, simply stated.
...from the mouths of babes...
...or otters...
...or french fries...

Alt text: "Things are ominously cute with french fry around." It's . . . a harbinger of DOOM, of DEATH!

French Fry! Watch out for swooping crows!

I love that panel 5 is french fry speak for "I'm brave enough!"

These are really cute until you consider the possibility that he is just hallucinating all of it.

When a child tells you he has an imaginary friend, do you get a grave expression on your face and cut off all communication forever?

Imaginary friends are fine, as long as the kid knows they are imaginary. Believing that french fries are completely alive is a little Mark David Chapman, if you know what I mean.

Oh Jesus. I think I'll stop reading now, for nothing will achieve the pathos.

I was going to rag all over this strip, and then I saw the last page and I felt myself get happier.

Lovely.

I love these Phillipe strips. So gentile and playful.

non-Jewish?

I have a theory that after graduating from Calvin & Hobbes the natural progression leads you then to Achewood.

I agree with this theory, and pronounce it law.

As a short girl with tall friends, this comic opens up an entire world of possibilities for me. The poor fry really needs a cape, though.

The best thing is that you know that just before, they were talking about what the clouds looked like . . . all lying in a field, practically holding hands . . ,

Philippe kills me, every time.

I can't work out if it's all in the stuffed one's head. It makes me hope not :S

Great strip. One thing, though: I see no reason why its title shouldn't be "French Fly"

I don't know what I enjoy more; Happy Philippe, or traumatized Philippe.

A comment left by norsef was marked lame too many times and excluded. (marked lame by cuddlefish, Cracklewater, logic)

No.

This is a nice break for Philippe to be away from the sociopaths in the household.

Is it?

This is a nice break for Philippe to be away from the sociopaths in the household.

I guess you're pretty sure of that, then.

saddest thing? if a bird had flown down and stolen the fry.
