Lyle's pensive morning moment Thursday, December 20, 2001 • read strip Viewing 69 comments:

The Turks I know are midget-robots, drug dealers, and outsourcers.

Are you German?

the world may never know.

Not German; I just know strange people. And midget-robots .

this is the first strip that i realized that lyle had a mustache and is not just constantly smiling.

I don't know any Turks, but I know they live in Istanbul and not Constantinople.

It's true!

Oh, shit, I had a date in Constantinople!

She's waiting for you in Istanbul.

just pray it's not one of those midget-robots, drug dealers, or outsourcers that roastbeef talked about.

TMBG!

I left my heart in Constantinople.

Well, that's really no one's business but theirs.

What's the big deal? Old New York used to be New Amsterdam.

Why'd they change it?

I certainly can't say. Perhaps people just liked it better that way.

Byzantium?

If you knew some, you could ask why Constantinople got the works.

He's just saying what we're all feeling.

I have said this to myself.

Ahh, the quotable Lyle! The last panel could've been the whole comic, like a Family Circus (gag) and it'd still deserve a 5.

Family Circus is the AIDS virus of the sunday paper bloodstream.

A comment left by red_dawn was marked lame too many times and excluded. (marked lame by Nurdbot, Sprog, sumisueme)

Yes.

I think he meant sober as in personality, chums.

It's a nice play on words.

I have never known a Turk that wasn't sober in his personal life.

I suspect his meaning is based on the historical use of Turk as referring to a member of the Ottoman Empire, one of the major islamic kingdoms of the world from the high middle ages until just after world war one. As islamic sharia law forbids the drinking of alcohol, the empire, like many other islamic states, banned the practice, at least for the muslim majority. Hence the expression: Sober as a Turk.

You know too much.

thank you Cliff Clayven

Norm!

the age old question... why can't i wake up sauced?

Indeed. One that we all must face.

You're not drinking enough before you go to bed.

Nobody can wake up sauced. People who say "I think I'm still drunk" in the morning are just chicks who are trying to play down the fact that last night WE TOTALLY GOT DRUNK, HAD SEX.

meh i woke up drunk more times than i can count... which isnt saying much... but still... just drink 2 or 3 bottles of vodka and you cant possibly sleep long enough to get sober...

Yeah, untrue. Waking up drunk is just like waking up hungover, but with more drinking.

Enjoy these, your salad days.

Now this is one of my classics. More of Lyle's alcoholic take on life would be nice.

Are turks known specifically for their sober tendencies?

What's up with that clock? Is it some sort of 24-hour clock without a minute hand? If that's the case, then it's wrong.

That clock confuses me.

The significant hand of the clock is pointing to the 7-hour.

I think it's exactly 7:37 or sometime around then, so the minute and hour hand are right over each other.

I have thought this on at least three occasions and I think this is marketable.

Excellent There Might Be Giants reference there fellows.
Personally, I long to live such a lifestyle where the only responsibilities and problems seem to be related to getting drunk. He has no bills to pay, prison-time to serve or jobs to hunt for, apparently. Does he even pay for his gin? Only Onstad knows.
Then again it's an early strip. I recall Lyle looking for a job in a later strip.

Lyle's blog is almost all about work and getting money one way or another.

And getting fired from various hospitality jobs, or starring in gonzo videos, or fucking post-op trannies.

I have woken up still buzzed from the night before, drank a few cold ones, fell back asleep, and then woken up drunk. It's pretty good. I've also woken up early, dropped a couple acid tabs, set my alarm for 2 hours later, and woke up tripping. THAT was interesting.

I know the "excellent icon-comment synergy, dude" comment is hella overplayed, but dude, excellent icon-comment synergy.

This is how I feel most days.

my daily lament.

Seven AM and sober as a Turk; ten AM and drunk as a lord. What happens at one?

you are not afraid of the motherfucking police.

One PM, out like a light.

This was my first strip and the reason I like Lyle so much.

Classic. I love that I actually feel sorry for Lyle's predicament here. Masterful.

Simple solution, get an IV and fill it with Jack. Sorted

My head-of-department is a Turk, and is responsible for the dry campus with which I have struggled.

Replace "gin" with "lasagna" to make an odd but basically typical Garfield strip

Remove Garfield for a decent comic.

The ultimate Garfield Minus Garfield

It's a window into humanty's own soul...

Oh wait, it's just a window.

Potato, potato.

this is the first time i have noticed the manliness of the tigers stache

I've asked myself the last line sooooo many times

a poignant moment...

This is the saddest thing.
