Lie Bot: Saddest Thing: redux Monday, June 2, 2003 • read strip Viewing 60 comments:

I think there was a Ramona about this...

Which one was ugly? Ramona or Beezus?

Henry Huggins, actually. It was kind of a weird side plot. Ramona and Ribsy end up kind of saving the day as a team.

I'm sorry it took you five months to go to the library and read every Ramona book in order to respond to that.

I'm sorry.

Man the "saddest thing" strips are pure genius.

This might indeed be the actual saddest thing

Indeed, of all the saddest things so far, this is totally the saddest saddest thing.

As is my tendency to repeat actions in Achewood, I hope to God my first daughter isn't ugly.

you take your empathy elsewhere, heifer.

Why does Philippe keep asking this question?!

He ought to know by now.

Who needs a house out in Hackensack

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS

What the fuck

You guys went in two different directions there, despite having strikingly similar avicons.

He wants to be a tough guy.

A little otter's got a lot to remember!

One thing is for sure: Lie Bot is probably not the best one to answer it.

Philippe is five.

but I still think the retard with the egg was the saddest. Maybe I am biased?

agreed

Why would you be biased? Is one of your relatives a retard with an egg?

Because... I was the egg .

Nooooooooo!

God that is scary with your dead band teacher avatar.

The voice comes from the bullet hole.

I tell this one allllll the time.

I tell this to my teenage son and he just kind of looks at me funny. I need a daughter.

The saddest thing is a teenage boy who is told by his own father that he will never be a talented rock star.

And then the father opens the front door, and on the porch is the boy's guitar case with all of his Hot Topic T-shirts in it.

Best ever.

OMG IM CRYING

Man, I think this is the only strip I have the alt text memorised for. It is: They have this conversation over an empty kitchen table.

It's 'across' and 'breakfast table', specifically.

A little white suitcase....

this is the first achewood i ever read.

Still my favorite Achewood strip!!! I <3 Philippe. I want more Philippe and Lie Bot action!

whoa, let's not get carried away.

Mr. Onstad, this is your finest moment. You are truly a monster, and I love you for it.

I thought it was kind of sad after the first part, but the suitcase ending made it for me.

two thigns:

1) i read this as lie bot telling philipe the saddest thing, then waiting for his reaction, seeing that it is not horrified enough, then adding to the original lie (if indeed it is such) in order to draw even more horror from the poor young otter.

2) the detail of it being a white suitcase is AWESOME

3) i mistyped 'things' as 'thigns' and 'three' as 'two.'

WHISKEY

Nonono, the pause was for dramatic effect, allowing Philippe to fully imagine the tragic picture he paints, holding his breath for the final blow.

And by the way this is completely the saddest thing ever and no one should say otherwise.

chubby for the forth thing that didn't get a number. probably because it was more important the all the rest.

Is it silly that this strip caused my throat to tighten up a bit? Or does Achewood have this effect on others as well?

I have to admit that I'm feeling a little weepy now. Misty-eyed, even.

I think I need a drink.

Are you going to weep the Weepy-Weep Way?

I love these strips. Phillipe's expression of angst and trepidation at the addendum to Lie Bot's tale in the third panel is priceless.

Am I the only one who doesn't go crazy for re-run strips?

This isn't a re-run, it's a running gag. The first time he asked Lie Bot what the Saddest Thing was, he gave a different answer.

wait...when asked this question, why doesn't Lie Bot lie?

It is a lie... there are sadder things still.

Like two pikachu fighting each other when Team Rocket's still on the loose... Or an eyeball that will spend all day looking out a screen at other people's laughing faces and never read the joke...

I'm feeling really dumb that I...don't... totally get this strip. Did the little girl run away? If so, why didn't she take the suitcase? I'm sure I am going to punch myself in the neck when someone explains this...

Her parents have packed all her things because they're throwing her out of the house. Because she's ugly.

I just punched myself in the neck.

No, but really, thanks. I feel like an idiot, and this strip is way better now. What is the matter with me...

Sadder than marrying a pregnant flower that is about to die?

Lie Bot Leans In Too Far

Chubby. Would Look At Again.

this might be better than the original. maybe. how do we measure this?
