Lyle Builds Philippe's Dream Car Wednesday, May 12, 2004 • read strip Viewing 90 comments:

Philippe is so concerned with the community thinking about the word 'fag'.

sound effect: "press"

Todd is a true Dream Warrior.

The REAL interesting part about Todd is that he seems to know what Philippe is thinking, so he can tell him not to worry.

lyle, you are the living end.

i had to read this one in two parts because i laughed so hard at the 4th panel. who calls a 5yearold a huge fag?

i can't stop laughing

Me neither. Feels kinda good.

Me.

(I do.)

Just to clarify, I don't.

I concur

I had fived it before Todd even appeared.

Lyle.

Me
(I do.)

This might be my favorite comic just for panel 4

He looks so cute in panel 5.

You mean, every panel?

is the part that confounds you the word Dokken ? the short version: they are an 80s era terribly awesome shit-band, the kind that has one dude playing on a bone-encrusted guitar

If this seriously bothers you, you may kiss one.

Yo. George Lynch pwns face. But still chubby.

The above comment will be found by archaeologists in 3,000 A.D. who discover the internet as the last remnant of our society.

They will smoke a cigarette, re-read the comment one last time, turn off the computer, put a mercy bullet in its heart, and tell lies about "a society where information was free and all men were scholars."

I, Boredom Man, wish to have your suicidal babies.

(Is that the saddest, or second-saddest thing? Discuss.)

I was babysitting this kid, poured him a bath and went downstairs to play video games. He DROWNED himself man, so... its so selfish.

oh man panel 4 did me in. Right in the middle of a meeting with my laptop. I had to leave.

oh man, tell me about it. i was all crying and shit. that indignant "Hey!". i still laugh about it

I laughed hard. Then stopped. Then started again. Then tried to stop. Then I hid in the toilet for a while and returned to my desk, trying to regather some dignity.

What happened was, I too read this at work (in my lunch hour), and laughed. And then quickly had to think about something else to stop laughing. And then when I got home just now thought 'I will look up that comic again and have a proper good old laugh', and actually the thought of it made me start laughing before I had even opened up my web browser to do so. All just sitting there laughing at my laptop's start up screen. Then I had to explain it to my boyfriend. So it goes.

I love how the stoner Squirrel thinks that offensive homosexual slang is just as bad as Dokken.

No, he thinks it's worse.

To be fair, Dokken is pretty bad.

It's silly to like Dokken!

classic lyle

I used the fourth panel as my avatar somewhere else for a little while.

fuckin hilarious

oh my god you have the best name on this board

Alt text:
I used to have a Celica with a license plate frame that said I was a woman.

toyota celica.

Well, Celicas are made for women and small Asians.

My old Taurus had a sticker on it about how war is never necessary or some such thing, four times some asshat left a note on my car in a parking lot responding to it. It wasn't even my sticker. My cars windshield is not a message board. I can only Imagine some Pat in whoever would make such a reply.

I think the first 4 panels coulda been the whole comic

oh, i dunno, the "problems in the community" bit is vital character development for our friend Philippe.

He is, after all, running for President. He's got an image to maintain.

Ohhh I totally forgot about that. Ah, in a way that kind of makes it less funny...

I mean, it's sort of better to imagine his worry about causing problems in the community just because... he's just worried about the community. Not because of his impending Presidency.

Still fucking great though.

Philippe seemed less than interested in his presidential run in the last strip that referenced it. I think he is just worried about the community. Philippe doesn't strike me as politically savvy enough to be worried about it the other way. He is just a good (and special) boy.

Can Todd read Philippe's mind?

That or he was eavesdropping on the earlier conversation. And since dropping eaves is a mighty sin that young squirrel better have some Uri Geller going on.

By sometime Todd means: "right now".

Anyone else believe that Phillipe's car somehow resembles Bowser's flying machine thing ?

Has anyone noticed that Philippe's car is the same as Monkey Boy's in the comics that Onstad did for the Stanford Chaparral ?

It's a distinctive look.

You two dudes confuse the shit out of me. Lookit them avatars. Lookit them.

sirptom wins

Yeah. What's up with that?

That's totally what I thought, too!

Quite simply, if I was a huge fag, I'd get the "Here comes a huge fag" shirt. But I'm not, I'm a special boy, in every single sense, and as such I have that shirt. And I've already got a cat, thankyou.

It would only get you some pussy if you live, work, or attend school in the kind of place where people wear messenger bags and listen to Xiu Xiu. I live in that kind of place. I think I will wear a 'huge fag' t-shirt.

I paint my toenails a "frozen teal." You know the story.

Lyle has paired a single note from the horn with each word until he gives 'fag' a nice little flourish at the end.

I like to think that Todd's horn has the identical music.

I have discovered, through careful research, that Todd's horn plays the same tune as Todd's open mic song.

By panel 2, this one was already a 5 out of 5. By panel 4, it became infinity out of 5.

Lmao, oh jesus, the shoes haha.

first time i've seen this strip, i don't think i've shot beer out of my nose ever before to anything on the internet.

Philippe will be all right because Todd will take charge of causing problems in the community.

That horn is for highway emergency use ONLY!

Thanks to this strip, when you search for my Achewood sticker'd cell phone with bluetooth, you will find 'A huge fag'.

all i need is that van and some coke and i will be RUUUUDE as hell

I always pictured Phillipe's shoes and guitar playing a warm, friendly recording of his elderly mother saying "Here comes a special boy." I now picture the same exact motherly tone as his car's voice. Awesome.

I don't understand how Todd can make the comparison - his horn seems to be entirely accurate.

Also, Lyle seems to have gained some subtlety since the days where he would just punch Philippe in the stomach.

Or tell him to shove it, thus killing him.

It's not even a song, it's just Lyle yelling off-key.

The squirrel calls the otter, who is several times larger than him, "little guy."

i bought a cadillac el dorado off my grandparents and didn't realize until two months later that the license place said "Grandma's Taxi".

todd is on the forefront of great coke music to do coke to

coke

fuck yes.

Going from the very beginning to now, this is my favourite favourite one. I was going to qualify that by saying I can't picture Philippe knowing about "fag"--see Homosexuals, the Gorilla--but every five year old knows about "fag." It's like genetic memory or some shit.

I think I killed my spleen... the fourth panel is hilarious. And I thought it might say: "Here comes a Special Boy!" Also, Philippe's car is what I imagined to be like from a five-year-old's creative mind.

This is the strip that got me reading Achewood regularly. It never gets old.

Panel four and six are golden, and so is the horn.

PRESS

why would todd care about his horn telling the truth about him?

Dokken exploding a chicken using sheer 80's metal power Because, you know. Yeah.

OH GOD NO my first post and I eff up something. Today is not my day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uoy8q3Xld9w

I like how Phillipe is more worried about the community than about people thinking he is a fag.

I plan to get a license plate frame that says "I was a woman."

Lyle has crossed the line.
