Ray Insulted Russell Simmons? Tuesday, August 9, 2005 • read strip Viewing 45 comments:

It's like a modern-day Trojan Horse.

Some guy on the street asked Russel If he was Tim Simmon's brother. After a few trips and a hire P.I. Ray found this outside his door.

Except Ray's cleverer than the entire Trojan people put together, all of whom were FUCKING MORONS.

I'm just gonna come out and say it: I DON'T GET THIS STRIP

Me neither. I am also reluctant to admit how often I have to Google the people mentioned in Achewood strips.

The answer lies within the blog of Phillipe. I think.

That's what I was thinking as well!

the joke is if you piss off Russell Simmons he will put a crazy big nike on your doorstep. I found it incredibly funny.

I thought the joke was how calm Ray is upon discovering a running shoe the size of a hybrid car on his doorstep.

And here I was thinking the shoe was just on a table in the foreground and in fact of a totally usual size.... rather than being right next to Ray and abnormally oversized.

Russell Simmons is a big dude, and Ray is a cat

Shoes aren't usually catsized. How tall is Russ, anyway?

That's not a crazy big shoe for a human, mind.

Uh, I don't know that many humans who wear shoes twice the size of an obese adult male cat. That's still a crazy big shoe.

Well played.

better a shoe than a jock strap.

The funniest part for me was that, although Ray doesn't remember the night, as soon as he sees that shoe he knows who's pissed at him. As if Russel Simmons and giant shoes on your doorstep are a Thing.

its quite easy, considering what russel simmons does for a living....

This was a good period.

is very good joke. russell simmons is like a hip hop manager type dude with lots of dollars. it's like getting a horse head in your bed like in the Godfather or getting your car smashed up with pennies like in Weeds. is so funny.

does anyone know what Nike model that is, exactly?

Closest match I think would be a custom Air Bruin Max ID Oregon. [NB I am not a brand name shoe expert. I buy $10 sneakers at a discount store, all with an upside down faux swoosh; a sneaker should not affect my credit rating. But Nike.com has hell of shoe pictures, and I geeky for looking up stupid things.]

Nike Air "Cortez"

thanks a lot!

The pheasant has no agenda.

This may be somehow related:

This one too.

Sneagator?

Ray is lucky. The shoe only appears on one level.

Talk about your lesser works of Cristo

I'm not even going to mention how long i thought panel 6 said "Richard Simmons."

yeah, same here. like, if you piss richard simmons off he's going to make some horribly superrealistic attempt at getting you into shape.

Today was the first day I ever realized it did not say "Richard Simmons."

Today was not the first day I read this comic.

Far from it.

Is wishful-contemporarymanship a real circumstance?

It should be. Lord, it should be.

But Ray has quit smoking!

Onstad seems to associate shoes with men of the last name Simmons for some reason

see the alt text here

If it had been a giant Adidas, I would be asking what I had done to piss off Run-DMC.

I love how Ray is just hanging out at a small bar, like a party is always going on in his life whether anyone else is around or not.

ruthell thimmonth.
